Perspiration, Potassium and Playing it safe in the summer heat.

Long hot Vegas days and underlying potassium deficiency.  Muscle aches and fatigue are almost universal complaints seen during the summer months. Summer heat and perspiration can cause an electrolyte imbalance especially with potassium.  (magnesium too).

It is estimated that ½ of American women are deficient in potassium, but is often missed on most blood tests.   Women are especially vulnerable since changes in the estrogen levels and other hormone imbalances lead to potassium loss.  Now we’re all aware that one of the major culprits for causing potassium are water pills especially the thiazide diuretic variety i.e., hydrochlorothiazide.

Generally while not commonly thought of as part of the process is concurrent magnesium loss too.   In order to correct fatigue, it is advisable to be given magnesium and potassium together.  The magnesium pushes the sodium out of the cell, making room for potassium.  How much do you need is a common question: 400mgs of magnesium and 4700 mgs of potassium daily .  Foods rich in potassium are avocados, spinach, and of course bananas.

Another option is to push coconut water, which has 600mgs of potassium per serving, can help replace electrolytes lost through sweat.   Remember potassium, magnesium for muscle cramps/fatigue.  Check us out on the web @ www.trimcare.com.
