Strategies for Weight Loss Success

I am constantly amazed at how many patients I see for weight loss in Las Vegas, especially women, whom aspire to more likely kill themselves to appear “waif.” Recently I saw an advertisement with Dr. Oz touting HCG sublingual drops for weight loss. However, he was critical of the very low calorie diet (500 calories) and the deficiency of protein content.I would be remiss if I didn’t comment about a recent patient I visited with in Las Vegas that had a BMI of 21 and 18% body fat. A patient with findings more suggestive of the eating disorder anorexia (not bulimia, because of her failing to maintain her normal weight). This young woman was a medical professional in a Las Vegas hospital, and her main complaint was that during her emergency room shifts, she suffered from incredible hunger and would crave carbohydrate-laden foods.

My recommendation in this case included multiple feedings per day (6-10 small meals on average). The reason for this is small to very small meal portions will stimulate satisfaction and satiety as eating reduces the hormone Ghrelin. Ghrelin is produced by cells lining the stomach and is the bad-boy in hunger stimulation. After we eat the levels of Ghrelin go down.
I have tried this strategy myself and found it to be very effective in losing and maintaining weight loss. I really like a line of supplements called Nutritional Resource. My favorite are their protein bars, and this low calorie snack/meal is very effective in curbing my hunger and shutting down Ghrelin. This same strategy can be used when a patient purportedly feels hypoglycemic. While the initial inclination is to reach for a candy bar, the more effective response is to ingest some high grade biological protein.

Also interesting to note is a new class of medicine introduced in Europe and the United States in early 2010. This new medication is called Victoza, (one shot per day), and can help to delay gastric emptying, promote satiety, fullness, and induce weight loss. Victoza has proven to have impressive effects on diabetes and weight loss. Yes its true, Victoza has a huge affect with weight loss! Patients under the care of a weight loss doctor have this medicine adjusted on an incremental basis, and sometimes see as much as 30-40 lbs melting away in six months.

Another recommendation is for the patient, who is stressed and hungry, to limit their carb intake to 20 percent of their daily calories. This will improve their chances of avoiding visceral fat accumulation, diabetes and other debilitating chronic illnesses.
The big advantage of having proteins and fats make up 80 percent of your daily nutrition is you slow the digesting process, have little to no effect on insulin and thus slow fat storage. Make sure you have Omega rich fats make up around 30-35% of the 80 percent target of proteins and fats.

The proteins you consume help release Glucagons, which release fat stores from the body for energy (triglycerides are broken down to blood sugar when needed). Proteins increase digestion time (beef being one of the longest digestion times) and increase satiety as well as micronutrient delivery.

Omega rich fats increase regeneration of muscle cells. Fats increase digestion times promoting more fullness. I really like Krill oil from Rejuvention Science and always recommend it to my patients. It is one of the fastest moving products in our TrimCare Las Vegas Weight Loss Centers.

I recommend eating every two hours upon waking and try to average between 1200 and 1500 calories per day. If you wish, you can start lower with your caloric intake and then increase the amount of calories by 200 after two weeks.
Don’t forget to increase your activity level for best results. You will lose weight by simply changing what, when and how much you consume each day, but by adding in some exercise the results will be faster and last a lifetime.

If exercising is new to you, or something you haven’t experienced for a while, it’s always best to get checked out by your doctor. After medical approval start with a brisk walk three times per week for at least 20-minutes and incorporate total body resistance training 2-3 days a week. The resistance training will have a very positive impact on your blood glucose utilization and calorie burning of the current additional fat stores.

Speaking of the best way to exercise ask us about the new Trimcare DNA fitness/diet program. By performing a cheek swab for 30 seconds, we can determine whether you’re wired for endurance and or power. Understanding your DNA and its impact on your ability to lose and maintain weight loss is gaining notoriety across America, and we are really talking it up here in Las Vegas.
